Here are some questions to help you think through and apply the doctrine of election this week:
”Our election is unconditional except for one thing. There is one requirement we must meet before God will ever elect us. To be elect we must first be sinners.” (R.C. Sproul)
1. According to this quote and Romans 9:11, what is the basis of your election by God? How should this understanding affect the way you relate to God? To people who do not believe in election?
2. Why do you think that the doctrine of election is the first step in the Order of Salvation?
3. Read Ephesians 1:1-6. What is God’s reason for “choosing” and “predestining” His people in this passage? How does this challenge the way you live for Him? How does this change something you previously thought?
4. How would you answer someone who objected that the doctrine of election made God unfair?
5. Read 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5. How can you be sure that you are elect? How can you use this verse to comfort someone who is struggling with this teaching? (also see John 10:25-30)
Have a great week. Sunday’s topic: The Doctrines of Calling and Regeneration.
