Hey gang! Here are some questions to help you think through and apply the doctrine of adoption:
What is a Christian? The question can be answered in many ways, but the richest answer I know is that a Christian is one who has God as Father. (J.I. Packer, Knowing God)
1. In Knowing God, J.I. Packer states that he thinks adoption is the highest honor God bestows upon a believer. Why do you think he says this? Is he correct?
2. Read 1 Timothy 5:1-2. What would a church look like if believers saw one another in this light? What prevents you from loving other believers like this?
3. Why can’t we just love God without being a part of the Church? (Hint: see 1 John 4:19-21)
4. Read Ephesians 5:1 and Matthew 5:16. What responsibilities do we bear as God’s children?
5. How does the fact that God sees Christians as his sons and daughters help when you doubt God’s love for you?
6. If according to Revelation 4:10-11 God is the believer’s greatest reward, then what is the practical use in the present? What in your life keeps you from seeing God as your greatest gift? What rivals God for your affections?
