As a seminarian, I have lost count of how many times an older minister or a professor has warned me about the indispensable nature of godly character. A man’s godliness, demonstrated by day-in and day-out dependence upon the grace of God conquering his sin, is of the utmost importance. Grace is the only tonic which will fuel God-glorifying ministry and simultaneously soothe the minister’s weary soul.
One minister who knows the joy and heartache of gospel ministry is Tim Keller, Senior Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Dr. Keller has written a short article entitled Ministry Can Be Dangerous to Your Spiritual Health, which is a clarion call to ministers to cling to the cross each day. Read this article and see the gospel once more with renewed eyes. Believe it. Love it. Live it. Preach it.
